CHEF de BEAUTÉ kyoto
A brand that leaves its base unscented and lets you add the scent. One Aroma Shooter 3 stands at the counter where four of them are smelled and chosen.
Overview
CHEF de BEAUTÉ, a brand from the 140-year-old cosmetics house Momotani Juntenkan, ships its skincare unscented and lets the customer choose the scent. Their line: your own skin knows best what suits it.
At the flagship that opened in Kyoto’s Fuyacho in April 2026, visitors pick a texture and a scent and compose a hand cream of their own. There are four scents, built on the brand’s seasonal themes.
For a brand built on choosing, a lingering scent is fatal
Present one scent and nothing can go wrong. Lay out four and ask someone to choose, and everything changes.
If the first scent is still hovering over the counter when the second arrives, what the customer smells is not the second one — it is the two of them mixed. By the third and fourth it is muddier still, and the last two end up dropped from the running without ever being properly compared.
In a shop that sells the pleasure of choosing, that is the product itself breaking.
One out, one cleared
A single Aroma Shooter 3 sits at the counter. Nothing is sprayed: each scent arrives when it is called for and clears afterwards. The fourth is smelled on the same terms as the first.
We make the cartridges, too. The brand’s seasonal fragrances come to us and go back as custom cartridges, carrying that same scent — because what is sampled and what is sold have to be the same thing.
