Ritsumeikan University CVIC XR Arena
Scent across a 420 m² XR arena — eight Aroma Shooter 3 units in a facility built to measure how an environment affects people.
Overview
In May 2026 Ritsumeikan University opened CVIC (Ritsumeikan Advanced Cross-verse Innovation Commons) on its Biwako-Kusatsu Campus. Backed by Japan’s MEXT J-PEAKS programme, it is a research base for what the university calls embodied-sphere research: measuring, scientifically, how people respond in a world where the real and the virtual overlap.
At its centre sits the X-Verse Arena — about 420 m², one of the largest XR arenas in Japan. Eighty motion-capture cameras work with six floor projectors, alongside instruments that record brain activity and other biometric data. Dozens of people can walk through the same virtual space at once while their responses are logged.
Aromajoin added smell to that space.
The larger the room, the harder the scent
Conventional diffusers make their presence felt by filling a room with fragrance. Do that across 420 m² and two problems follow. The scent stays in the air. And when the scene changes, the previous scent is still there.
In a facility built to measure how an environment affects people, that is fatal. If the last experiment’s fragrance bleeds into the next one, the conditions are no longer the same. The scent has to appear when it is needed and disappear when it is not.
Eight units around the arena
Eight Aroma Shooter 3 units were placed around the arena, surrounding the audience. Nothing is sprayed: the scent is carried on an air stream and delivered directly, so no residue builds up in the room. When the scene changes, the scent changes with it.
In Flower Garden, the interactive piece created by STYLY, visitors carry a bouquet-shaped controller and digital flowers bloom across the floor in real time as they walk. Cherry blossom and lavender meet those flowers. Natural forest, incense — each scene carries its own scent.
For the installation, a white limited-edition Aroma Shooter 3 was prepared, so that the hardware would not disturb the clean white screens that give the X-Verse Arena its look.
Add units, extend the reach
Eight units cover this arena — but eight is not a ceiling. Aroma Shooter is designed so that coverage grows with the number of units. A larger space, or a more finely staged one, simply takes more of them.
At 420 m², the scent does not thin out, does not linger, and keeps up with the scene. CVIC is where that was shown.
