Overview

The Iwata Museum of Fragrance is one of the few museums in Japan devoted to scent. Its permanent collection holds incense burners and perfume bottles; upstairs, three walls and the whole floor become one screen — a room-sized VR theatre.

No goggles, so the room itself must carry the scent

There are no headsets here. The picture fills the visitors’ field of view, so the scent cannot sit inside a mask: it has to change the air of the room. Several people, at once, need to receive the same scene’s scent.

And it must not stay. If the previous scent is still hanging when the next scene begins, the journey turns muddy. Downstairs, meanwhile, sits a permanent collection of perfumes and fragrant woods. Clean air is the museum’s baseline, not a nice-to-have.

Scent from the ceiling, gone again in time

So Aroma Shooter 3 units were mounted in the ceiling. They send scent down over the audience, hold it for as long as the scene needs, and let it clear before the next. Nothing is sprayed, so nothing settles on the floor, the walls, or the screen.

The picture changes and the scent changes with it — three scents, taking turns as the film travels.

Reach a large room with scent, but leave nothing behind. A museum asks for both at once.
