LUCUA 1100 — AromaSignage®
Signage that recommends a perfume and then lets you smell it on the spot. It ran for four months in Umeda, Osaka.
Overview
From November 2019 to February 2020, a scent signage stood in LUCUA 1100 in Umeda, Osaka. Answer a few questions on the screen and a recommendation algorithm picks a perfume for you — then you smell it, right there.
The old problem at a perfume counter
Nobody buys a perfume without smelling it, so counters hand out blotters. Spray the paper, wave it, bring it to your nose, spray the next one. A few in, and the paper, your hands and the air have all run together. You can no longer recall what the first one smelled like.
Six scents, one clean one at a time
The signage holds six solid-scent cartridges. Aroma Shooter 2 delivers the recommended one, then clears it. The next scent begins without the last one in the way.
Nothing is sprayed, so nothing transfers to hands or clothes. Nobody goes home carrying the smell of a blotter instead of the perfume they wanted.
Plenty of screens will recommend something. What was missing was a screen that lets you smell what it recommended.
It began in 2018, with twelve perfumes to try at Daimaru Umeda. Through these four months, AromaSignage® took shape as a product of its own.
