Overview

In November 2018, a scent signage stood at a fragrance event on the third floor of Daimaru Umeda. Inside the screen: twelve popular perfumes from the brands on the floor. Touch the bottle you are curious about and its scent comes out.

Nobody makes it to the twelfth

Think about what people actually do at a perfume counter. Spray a blotter, wave it, smell it. The second and third are fine. But by the fifth or sixth, it is not the nose that gives out first — the air is saturated. The scent is on the floor, on your hands, on your sleeve.

You can line up twelve bottles, and a customer will still only compare the first few.

One out, one cleared

The signage releases only the scent chosen on the screen, then clears it. Nothing is sprayed, so nothing accumulates in the room, and nothing transfers to hands or clothes.

Which means the twelfth can be smelled like the first. Stocking twelve perfumes and letting someone actually compare twelve perfumes are not the same thing.
